“High functioning” is used to deny support.
“Low functioning” is used to deny agency.
Calling “High Functioning” level 1 instead and “Low Functioning” levels 2 and 3 doesn’t fix the problem.
The main problem to me is that everyone is different levels of “function” in different areas of life.
I have disgustingly high levels of adhd symptoms in most areas of my life, and I’m definitely considered low/medium functioning in academic scenarios (even there is depends on the course set up/prof/course content)
With all that said though, I’m very high functioning to the point of neurotypical passing with my job. I have few ADHD related problems there, and can do my job effectively and fully every single time I’m on shift.
Because of this, I can’t be categorized effectively. There’s a lot of “well you can do x thing at work why can’t you do y thing for school?” I am high functioning. But I’m also low functioning.
Tl;dr function levels fluctuate heavily based on circumstances and are therefore not effective classes for neurodivergent people
